The History Behind The Pomeranian Breed
Looking at the sturdy Spitz dogs that pull sleds though the deep winter snow of Lapland and Greenland, it's hard to believe that these dogs were the forefathers of the diminutive Pomeranian. It's true, though. The tiny Pomeranian was much a considerably larger dog, large enough to work herding sheep. It's not hard to imagine.

The dog was actually used as a sleigh dog in Iceland and Lapland and then it became a companion of human beings. In earlier times, the varieties bred in Europe weighed nearly thirty pounds. However, the weight was greatly curtailed as breeders made tremendous effort to make smaller dogs. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) standard, the dog now weighs around three to seven pounds, however, for a standard dog shows the weight may be limited to four to six pounds.
Pomeranians 101: Exotic Pomeranian Puppies
When you are thinking of adopting a pound puppy or an older puppy from a shelter, you might come across a pup that is built a lot like a Pomeranian, but is a strange color. Or perhaps the color looks great on the dog, but you are told that no Pomeranians come in that color that are breed standard. If you want a Pomeranian, you have found a good puppy. You've just found an exotic Pomeranian puppy as opposed to a standard Pomeranian puppy.
Black Pomeranians Make Great Pets
The black Pomeranian is not much different then the red and brown variety of Pomeranian, except it is black. It is a very intelligent dog and can be quite fierce when protecting its owners. The black Pomeranian has a pleasant temperament and makes a good first family pet. Even though a small dog, the black Pomeranian has a medium bone structure and is very sturdy. Its legs are in direct proportion to its body.
