The Great, Old History of Fishing
This type of fishing, which was also known as gillnetting actually began as fishermen started to use cedar fiber nets and canoes. People would attach stones on to the bottom of nets to serve as weights, as well as several pieces of wood on to the top that would serve as floats. That way, the net would be suspended straight up and down into the water. Every net was suspended from shore or in between two boats. Today, gillnets are still used by the native fishers in Canada, the Pacific Northwest and Alaska as they fish for steelhead and salmon.
Fishing
The serious aspect to fishing without using a net involves hunting for fish while using a fishing rod that has a hook or other means of trapping the fish. Also, fishing does not just refer to catching fish only. It can also encompass catching different aquatic creatures such as shellfish, squid, octopuses, turtles or even frogs or other kinds of marine invertebrates.
