protecting your health while on cruise vacations

By: Ken Morris

Because cruise vacations have come under some scrutiny over the past few years due to illnesses aboard them, protecting your health is an important issue for you to face when considering a vacation on one. Before you embark on a cruise, you should visit your doctor to see if you are physically fit to endure a week long cruise adventure. More than likely you will be, but the doctor may be able to give you a flu shot or other vaccination so you can be protected when traveling to another country. This should be done regardless of your travel plans. We did so before our Costa Blanca holiday. Cruise ships carry many people in an enclosed space, so you should protect yourself from germs and other issues.

Another way to protect yourself during a cruise is to order all of your food 'well done' if possible. This will ensure that your meat is cooked properly so you aren't exposed to any bacteria. Make sure all of your silverware is washed as well. Take the time to inspect your surroundings. While most cruise ships have cleaning standards, if you find something that could endanger your health, you should let the ship personnel know about it as soon as possible.

If you are currently taking any medications, you should remember to pack them so you can take them while on your cruise. Without proper medications, you could become ill, which will ruin all of your fun. Make sure you have all prescriptions filled and that you understand the dosages you are supposed to take.

Even though you are on a cruise, washing your hands, using hand sanitizer, and taking other precautions is still required. Being on vacation is no excuse for being lax in the hygiene department. Make sure that your family is doing its part as well to keep themselves clean. Don't touch anything that isn't yours and don't drink out of other people's glasses. These measures will keep you safe from illness while on your cruise.

Buying travel insurance in case there is an emergency will help you pay for medical attention while on vacation. With travel insurance, can pay for medications, hospital care, and other medical needs that may be necessary. You can also save from having to pay huge fees in case you need to cancel the cruise. Travel insurance also covers lost or stolen luggage costs, medical evacuations, and other expenses when traveling. Because many health care plans do not extend outside certain regions, you will have to purchase additional insurance in order to travel safely.

If traveling with children on a cruise, having extra insurance is necessary when you want to protect them from harm. Because there are many ways that children can harm themselves when on a cruise, being able to pay for medical emergencies is very important. Being prepared for whatever may happen when traveling can help save your children's lives when they are in danger.

By properly preparing for a trip, you will reduce the risk involved. While no one can predict what will happen when traveling, being prepared will help you feel better when traveling with your family.
