I've got an important story for you today. And it has to do with your idea of retiring someday. It all started last week when I went for a massage. But this one was different. Because it made me think about my clients. Specifically what separates the successful Internet business owners from those that are always struggling. The masseuse - I'll call her GP for short - discovered a big knot in my shoulder and asked me if I work in front of a computer. I said I did and I'd been spending a lot more time typing than I usually do. The conversation drifted to how many hours a week I work, what I do in my Internet business, and what I do on the weekends. When she heard how much time I took out of my schedule for fun and time with my family, she was surprised at how I'm able to squeeze in everything. I get this a lot when explaining the realities of Internet business. When people find out about my work load and my lifestyle, it doesn't make sense to them. I was curious about my masseuse's work schedule and off time, and we started talking. I was shocked when I heard how she lives her life. Get this... my masseuse had worked non-stop for six months without having a single day off. No sick days, no personal time and no vacation whatsoever. And she works all day. Sure, she makes a good living, but she's making the mistake that a lot of people make. Normal working people and Internet business owners alike. Look, even though I'm only 36 years old, I've already retired twice. Yet, today I am typing this note to you from my office surrounded by 12 exceptional employees. What happened? Why the hell am I still working in an Internet business? The reason I work today is: the whole concept of retirement is fundamentally flawed. The idea that you should sacrifice the best years of your life hoping to discover magical happiness in your later years doesn't prove out at all. It's just an old-fashioned theory you've been sold. And all you have to do is look around to prove to yourself how unrealistic it is. Here's a dose of reality for you. Most senior citizens can't retire. They have to keep working because what they get from the government doesn't go as far as it used to. And just because you work somewhere that gives you a company pension doesn't mean the pension fund is going to be there when you need it. And that also goes for good old social security, my friend. Many financial and retirement experts agree with this new reality, that most people you know will have to continue working when they reach the traditional age of retirement. You may not like how this sounds, but I encourage you to take it to heart. And consider this viewpoint that the entire idea of retirement is flawed. It's my opinion that you have to live life today, not tomorrow. And having the mindset that your retirement years will be better may not be reality. And just thinking this way will stop you from reaching the success that you deserve. Put yourself in the position where you can enjoy each and every day, while buiding a comfortable future. If you start an Internet business now, you'll be building your future with activities you can do when you're old if you have to. Plus you will have the freedom to enjoy life now, before you become officially old and gray.
