Hard-boiled detective fiction is generally referred to any detective fiction that has short, straightforward and often ironic style for a realistic, unsentimental effect. With its first introduced in the year 1920, the general plot of this kind of story is familiar with urban and industrial environment. The heroes/heroines of the story generally not some one who are very famous and they always work alone to sort the case. Normally, hard-boiled detective fiction consisted of four main elements, which are; language the writer use in the story, the setting which means conditions and plot of the story, the detective and his/her investigation. The reader of hard-boiled detective can find it very easily to read and follow with the story as its language used is very straight forward and mostly to describe things rather than the idea. The language used will be also very easy, which try to tell reader on what exactly happened and what was said rather than give a lot of mystery for the readers to guess. When the hard-boiled was first introduced in 1920, it was very popular among readers by the stories were publish in many popular magazines, which are Pulp Magazine and Novelettes. The reason that makes hard-boiled writing style to be short, clear and straight forward was the writers of these stories were paid based on number of words. Therefore, the magazine’s editor had to get rid of unnecessary words that appear on the story in order to save money that they are going to pay to writers. Due to this reason, many writers of hard-boiled detective fiction then continued to use this pared-down style in their later stories as they do not want magazine editors get rid of words in their work so they can get less pay. Other reason, there were some good feedback from many readers that this style of writing. For example, the novel from Chandler keeps report only on what actually happen and what was said and he think that readers really like his style of writing. The setting (plot story) of hard-boiled detective fiction mostly urban, this may be because many of writers believe that city life always representing dark, dangerous atmosphere and places run by corrupt politicians and gangster syndicates. Therefore, it is undoubtedly that most of writers had chosen sort of crime that normally happened in city life and daily appeared on local newspaper and the people who involve in the story are mostly ordinary local people or sometimes famous ones that readers may know. The detective (hero) of this kind of novel mostly private detective who can be both male or female. However, there were some strong argument whether male or female will be good for hard-boiled story in early 1920. The last one of the most distinct characteristic of hard-boiled detective fiction is method of investigation. In keeping with origins in Western and romance stories, the hard-boiled detective is usually presented as being on a quest, and it is the quest itself, rather than its solution that forms the main source of interest for readers.
