Vegetarianism - A Summary

The act of excluding from animals from your diet is called vegetarianism. Vegetarians can be split into those that eat eggs and or dairy products and those that do not. Although they do not eat animal flesh there is no standard vegetarian diet. Vegetarians should try to make sure they eat a varied diet.

The earliest records of vegetarianism relate to peoples in ancient India and ancient Greece. These records date back as far as the 6th century B.C. For a period during the Roman Empire vegetarianism in Europe nearly disappeared completely. It recovered during the period of the renaissance. The first Vegetarian Society was founded in England in 1847 other countries including Germany and the Netherlands followed. The national societies joined together just over 61 years later to form the International Vegetarian Union. Vegetarians make up a minority of the people in the United States but the numbers are increasing everyday.

People may become vegetarians for a variety of reasons these include religious, ethical, health, environmental and taste. Part of the moral conduct of Jainism is vegetarianism. Meat and its production it can be argued are wasteful for the food value it creates. At a simple level some vegetarians just can not cope with the taste, texture or smell of animal flesh.

As there are many kinds of vegetarian food the vegetarian diet can be very different depending on the vegetarian in question. Some vegetarians will follow a healthy diet or one based on being high in fibre and low in fat and calories. Fast food in the form of bean burritos and soy cheese pizzas can be part of some vegetarian diets.

Across the globe a number of countries can offer many different styles of vegetarian food. Southern India has the following vegetarian dishes dosas, idlis and vadas. Ethiopia has an array of dishes of which the best known are probably hummus and couscous. Certain far-Eastern countries can offer mushrooms, mixed vegetables and rice.

Nowadays it is easy to find many wonderful vegetarian recipes. For hundreds even thousands of ideas go on the internet or get yourself some of the great cookery books out there. The cooking will have started in India, china or other far away lands but you can try it now. These recipes will help vegetarian plan a varied diet to ensure it includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grain cereals, legumes and nuts. You should commit to trying one new vegetarian dish each week. Go on and discover a new and exciting dish and then keep discovering.
