Utah Olympic Park

By: Blake Provo

At Deer Valley there are so many things to do, but a must is a visit to the Utah Olympic Park. It is located only five miles away from the Deer Valley ski resort; this huge complex was where many of the 2002 Winter events took place. While the Olympics are finished, this park still provides fun for the entire family whether it's winter or summer. Make sure you schedule this in on your Deer Valley vacation itinerary.

The park is set in a gorgeous spot merely a few minutes away from Deer Valley and provides something for everyone. During the winter months, individuals who are willing to pay the fee can take The Comet down the bobsled track that Olympic athletes used. This aggressive bobsled ride can get up to 80 miles per hour and exerts 5Gs on the athletes. You travel down the track with two friends and a driver, achieving the 3 mile distance in under a minute. This is not for the weak, but it is an incredible experience for the daring soul. During the summer months, The Comet is outfitted with wheels which gives it the ability to travel down a concrete track. This ride is not quite as extreme but it's fun and less expensive. Other rides that are available for the daring summer guest include two zip lines where you can zip high above the scenery at up to 50 miles per hour and the Quicksilver alpine slide. The alpine slide is a relatively new addition to the park and provides fun for kids as young as three accompanied by an adult.

For those that don't feel the need for speed, there are plenty of other activities that dont require a seat belt or a harness. Only a couple paces away from the parking lot is the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center which houses two museums. One gives tourists a nostalgic look at ski history and the 2002 Olympic Museum showcases memorabilia from the games.

Visitors are also able to take a guided (or self-guided) tour of this park to see all of the facilities. In addition to the bobsled track, there are six awesome Nordic ski jumps and other jumps for freestyle aerials. In the summer months you can see freestyle aerialists practicing their tricks and flips as they hurtle off a ski jump and into a 750,000-gallon-pool. The pool is used in the summer to permit freestyle jumpers to improve their tricks.

Whether you want to experience a part of Olympic history, winding down the bobsled track at incredible speeds, or merely enjoying the beautiful scenery; Utah Olympic Park has something to offer everyone. Package deals can be obtained for those who desire to participate in a combination of offered activities.
