Are you having trouble falling asleep at night? Well you may be in luck. Below are key questions to ask yourself to see if you are in the right mindset. If you have a stressful job or lifestyle, you may benefit from the answers to these questions. 1. Before I go to bed every night I: a) Take an hour to unwind b) Go straight to bed and try to relax c) Watch television The right answer here is: a. You may benefit from taking thirty minutes to an hour before bed time and spending it on yourself. If most of your day is spent serving others, you need to take the time to do what you want to do or you're just not living. You see, if you just go straight to bed and try to relax, it may not be working for you because your mind may be racing with 1000 thoughts per minute. So taking some time for yourself may help you slow down a little and relax. Also, watching television is not a bad thing. You can actually relax watching your favorite show. However, you may want to stay away from the news just before going to bed. Also you may want to turn off the television 15 - 30 minutes before going to sleep. 2. When I get home from work I: a) Keep to myself and don't want to be bothered b) Talk to my spouse about my day c) Have a few drinks to relax Letter b is the right answer to this question. What most married people don't realize is that they may have the best support system right there in their own home. Their spouses! While talking is probably the best thing a couple can do to stay connected to each other, it's also a good way to release your problems and clear your mind for a good nights rest. While we all need time to ourselves and don't want to be bothered, it may not necessarily be the best thing as we all need contact with our loved ones and family. Now an alcohol drink (such as wine) may be beneficial, you don't want to have a drink too late at night and not too much to drink. While the effects of alcohol can make you drowsy, it can wake you up in the middle of the night. 3. When I prepare for the next day I: a) Do nothing b) Think about what I am going to do in bed c) Write out my schedule and goals for the next day ahead The right answer here is: c. If you lead a stressful life and can't fall asleep at night, doing nothing will not help you fall asleep. Thinking about what you are going to do the next day is helpful, but not when you're in bed trying to all asleep. What's more productive is writing down what you are going to do the next day. There are three major benefit's to this: 1) your mentally prepared for the next day, 2) writing will serve as an acknowledgement for your day ahead, and most importantly your day now has purpose because you set a goal or two to accomplish. In your mind you are doing something important and worthwhile.
