The Negative Effects of a Hostile Work Environment

By: Priscilla Demby

When it comes to motivating employees, money is not the only tool to use. As a business owner, you should also work to keep your employees happy and safe within their workplace.

Employees should be able to look forward to going to the office because they enjoy working there.

In what ways does a Hostile Work environment damage the employee's psyche?

Performance in the workplace is quite often an emotional and a mental factor. An employee who is happy will tend to work more happily and give a good performance which will actually be felt in the metrics of the company.

At the very least, a hostile work environment would mean that the employee is not satisfied with the workplace and its work ethos. In such a case, the employee would feel disgruntled towards his employer which may eventually cause a dip in performance and worse still, may lead to him leaving the company.

How does a Hostile Work Environment affect the organization?

The company has the responsibility of providing its employees with a workplace where they can feel safe and secure. Failing to do so increases the potential for poor performance and productivity. An example would be a sexual harassment case between a manager and a female employee. It is only natural that her performance will be negatively affected by her emotional and mental state as a result of the incident.

This is even truer for employees who are particularly productive and who turn out quality work. Being victimized can not only lead to a dip in the employee's performance, and it can even keep that employee from ever achieving the same level of productivity. Someone who returns from work after an alleged hostile incident may still suffer from more harassment. When such conditions remain unchecked, it will also affect other members of the organization.

How can a company prevent the presence of a Hostile Work Environment?

As we have seen, a Hostile Work Environment is harmful not just to the employee but to the organization as well. As such, the company must ensure that no such environment is in operation at the workplace. The company has to provide its employees with an atmosphere that is conducive to their performance. One important step is to educate the employees about the company's internal policies and government laws regarding inappropriate behavior towards colleagues and the consequences of such behavior.

Legally, consequences for inappropriate behavior are serious. These can include the termination of the employee or worse, imprisonment. That is why the employees should also be aware of their actions and should actively do their part in ensuring that the workplace is safe and harassment-free.f
