By: Berlin Flores

Addiction is developing to a universal issue and “alcohol addiction” is turning into a serious issue due to the availability and legality of alcoholic beverages.

The term ‘alcoholism’ has various meanings. Naturally, alcoholism is the term that refers to the condition that results from the repeated intake of alcoholic beverages. Medically, alcoholism is referred to as a disease that results from an importunate consumption of alcoholic drinks regardless of the different unhelpful end results.

One should not confuse the mere drinking of alcohol with the clinical meanings of alcoholism. It is a known fact that the meaning of alcoholism is related to the taking in of alcoholic beverages but the constancy and the measure of alcohol consumption are the important determinants that are used to know if a man is encountering alcoholism or not.
The side-effects of alcohol addiction are classified under two groups: the short-term effects and the long-term effects.

We all know that alcohols, especially ethanol, are possible central nervous system (CNS) tranquilizers. The degree of toxicity depends on many factors. For example, the level of toxicity is lesser when alcohol is used after having a meal as compared to the level of toxicity when the alcohol is consumed without having a meal first. When it comes to hydration, the toxicity level is lower if the alcohol is diluted first prior to intake.

The effects of alcohol in the human system are known to be ‘biphasic’. The word biphasic is used to describe the side-effects of alcohol intake that changes from time to time. Alcohol originally causes joy and complacency. Over-consumption of alcohol may lead to blurred vision and coordination difficulties. Biologically speaking, when alcohol is used, it is discharged to the bloodstream and is discharged to all biological tissues in the human body.

(A) HEART DISEASE: The people who take in alcoholic drinks may develop lots of cardiovascular diseases. Acute myocardial infarction or congestive cardiac failure may develop if the alcohol addiction goes further.

(B) LIVER DISEASE: Lots of liver-related diseases may occur as a side-effect of alcohol addiction. Types of liver disorders that are caused by alcohol intake are fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis.

(C) CANCER: Various types of cancers like whie blood cell cancer, malignant melanoma, prostate cancer and thyroid cancer may occur because of alcohol intake.

(D) OTHERS: Alcohol intake may may develop into obesity and fatal alcohol syndrome that leads into the deterioration of the CNS.

Alcohol Addiction Determination

(1) Screening: The screenings are actually self-reports that are intended to determine the presence of alcoholism addiction. The different types of substantial screening methods are CAGE Questionnaire, ADD Questionnaire, Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test Questionnaire, and the PAT Questionnaire.

(2) Blood and urine examinations: By examining the blood and the urine of the subjected person, the nature of alcohol addiction may possibly be identified. Alcohol addiction may be examined through several indicators such as red blood cell enlargement, GGTP elevation, ASAT and SGPT ratio, and CDT elevation.

(3) Others: Some procedures including the testing of the genetic predisposition or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders are used to identify the alcohol addiction level and the degree of toxicity.

Similar to the medical and psychological techniques used for drug addiction, the treatment in this case is also classified into two particular sections which are alcoholic detoxification and counseling. The two treatment techniques are to be performed at the same time. By performing the detox procedures, the body of the person with alcoholism problems is cleansed. By performing the counseling or the intervention techniques, the person with alcoholic issues may be persuaded to give up alcohol addiction.

It is important to inform the world of the different topics concerning the disadvantageous effects of alcohol abuse to the physical and mental system of the people to lessen the number of people who are addicted to alcohol.
