The Great Earthquake Of Lassi

Kefalonia is based on the west side of the Greek mainland. Kefalonia can be spelt in many different ways and some of these ways include Cephallonia, Kefallonia and Cephalonia. Many people believe that the island is said to be named after Cephalus, a character from Greek Mythology and was the founding head of a great family.

Kefalonia is a stunning island with green grass, blue seas and sandy beaches. It is also immersed in history. The island went under many different rulings from Roman, Norman and English possession and was only united with Greece in 1864 along with the other Ionian Islands.

Tragedy struck Kefalonia in 1953 when a progression of catastrophic earthquakes hit the island, one of them recording a colossal 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake destroyed a vast number of structures and resulted in billions of drachmas in damages, and at least 80% of the 125,000 strong population decided to leave the island for a fresh start on other nearby islands. Evidence can be seen all across the island of Kefalonia of the great earthquake, this can be from ruined buildings to uneven cracked surfaces that crumbled buildings and structures.

As one of the larger Greek islands Kefalonia gets plenty of visitors each year during peak periods mainly of English and Italian holidaymakers and this has been improved since the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was released in 2001, which was shot on the island of Kefalonia.

Most tourists tend to visit location such as Lassi for their holiday or getaway due to its lively ambience that is perfect for all kinds of holidaymakers. Lassi plays host to many shops that are great for gift ideas so you won’t get bored. In the day time there are water sports, sweeping sandy beaches, and quiet sheltered coves for you to spend your relaxing holiday at.

Many of the beaches on the island are among the best on all the Greek islands put together. With abnormal rocky formations and striking fishing bays Kefalonia is home to fabulous scenery and peaceful relaxing beach breaks . If you are interested in exploring the island, there are many boat trips and cruises that can take you to significant hotspots and places of interest. So whether you want check out the rock formations, sunbath out in the open sea or anchor up on a secluded beach you can hire your own motor boat for the day to do just that.

If you enjoy scuba diving there are many instructors on the island that will make your break a more memorable time leaving you wanting more. You don’t have to be fully qualified or experienced, even if you’re a novice you will get the chance to discover a completely different world. Choose from cave diving and night diving and see some startling sites that will make your holiday one to remember for years to come. If you really wanted to you can also work towards earning a recognised scuba-diving certificate.
