The Basics EVERYONE Must Know About Accredited Distance Learning Colleges

By: Ras Reed

Most distance learning students are older men and women who are reluctant to go back into a classroom after being away from it for a long while. However, distance learning programs these days are seeing more and more younger people attending. Prior to distance learning as we have it now, people who were too busy raising a family and working constituted the student percentage. But not anymore.

Most distance learning providers steer clear of satellite transmission because of the enormous cost of setting up that it attracts. Satellite e-learning requires certain equipment for the success of the system. Satellite e-learning despite its effectiveness is quite expensive.

Without the Internet distance learning would have remained extremely difficult and expensive. Many people today consider it both, but they have never had to deal with it back in the day when all correspondence was on phone, running up enormous bills; or when lecture notes had to be sent by post, taking never-ending days and weeks before delivery. With the Internet most of these problems are now a thing of the past.

Many have stipulated that the success of Charles Wedemeyer’s Articulated Instructional Media from 1964-1968 is what impressed the British to begin the UK Open University. They imported their ideas from the communications technology that Wedemeyer introduced, and used them to create the college, which is now called United Kingdom Open University (UKOU). Naturally today, there are many other colleges with the same name, but the prefix ‘UK’ distinguishes this one.

Synchronous technology helps to propagate concurrent education at different places but at the same time. The flip side is asynchronous technology, which offers the same services, but with the added convenience of students receiving information at different times. Both approaches are used extensively in distance education.

There are some secure websites on the Internet that can be used for the purpose of simulating controlled conditions for a test. This is particularly useful if you are planning to conduct a test for your distance learning students. These sites work such that no one can perform some specific tasks for the duration of the test. In addition, serious time restrictions limit how much else the student can do.

Distance learning programs have specific audiences. There are some distance learning programs that are targeted at children. Some distance learning programs are geared towards educating a more older target audience.

A lot of audio and video cassettes have been used in the past. One daunting fact that limited them was their cost and bulk. Electronic technology has PDAs, mp3 players, etc., today that continue to proliferate distance learning in a way that is bigger than what used to avail through the course of the three centuries the practice has been on. Everybody can now do distance learning without breaking their backs.
