Search Engine Optimization - 7 Secrets to SEO Link Popularity

By: J.T. Kennedy

Do you have a website, but not seeing the targeted traffic it deserves? The internet is a great place to sell products and services, but unless your website is within the top 10 of a given keyword or keyword phrase, it's useless. This is where search engine optimization comes in.

Did you know that 78% of people research online first before making a purchase and in real estate, it's 98.5%? Also, 80-85% of clicks come from the top five results on the first page. This means, it's your goal to get you page within the top 5 of the search results.

Many companies who have put up a website an didn't get much traffic end up paying to advertise their website using pay-per-click ads with companies such as Google. Did you know that only 5% of people click on the pay-per-click section of the results? Why, because it's advertising and people know it. So, if you're only using pay-per-click advertising, you're missing out on the other 95% of potential customers.

One company who I've worked with (can't be named) spent over $500,000 per year on pay-per-click advertising just to stay at the top of the pay results. Imagine if they had spent that money on developing a search engine optimization strategy instead?

It's search engines job is to provide original, relevant content. So, the first rule is to write good pages which will grab your targeted audiences' attention. This includes a page with around 400-600 words and 5% keyword percentage.

After you have a links posted to your new page from other pages on your site, the next step is to get your page noticed by search engines such as Google.

Search engines work like this. Assuming your company offers software development services, the more pages about software development which link back to your page about software development, the higher your page will show up in search engine results. Simply put, this is because all these other pages are basically saying that your page about software development knows what it's talking about.

Please note: NEVER PAY MONEY to people who claim to submit your site to 1000's of websites for one low price. This will not help your website and search engines will actually penalize it causing it to rank even lower in search results.

Link Popularity is the term used to describe how "popular" your page is, which is determined by how many other pages link to your page. There are many ways to help your Link Popularity. All the following instructions assume your company offers Search Engine Optimization Services and you have a page which offers these services.

  • Writing comments on other peoples' blogs which are also about search engine optimization. Just make sure you have a link back to your page about search engine optimization in your signature.

  • Contribute to Forums which are about search engine optimization. There are lots of different forums on the internet. Add a link to your signature which points back to your page about search engine optimization.

  • Write articles about search engine optimization and post them to article sites. There's over 500 to choose from, but only submit to article sites who have a Google Page Rank of 2 or higher only and NEVER PAY FOR IT! You can't post any links in the article itself. But most sites do allow you to put two links in the bio section at the end of the article.

  • Submit your site to Directory services. Most directory services are a pay service, although there are a few free ones. Personally I would never pay to have my site listed, but that's up to you.

  • Propose Link Exchanges with other websites. Many websites have pages where they post links for other sites. Again, make sure the other site has a Page Rank of 2 or higher. This assumes your also has a Page Rank of 2 or higher, otherwise these sites might not link with you as well. Email the webmaster of this website explaining you want to exchange links. Most of the time, they will be interested. Just make sure you never give out a link without getting on in return.

  • Social Bookmarking sites have become another good way to get incoming links. If you don't know what a social bookmarking site is, they are basically a way for people to save their "favorites" on the internet. These "favorites" are saved on web pages viewable by everyone including search engines. Most people normally offer links to add the page to a social booking site using buttons on their blog. I use software called "Add This".

  • Do a search on your competitions' sites to see which sites link to their site. Chances are if these sites link to your competitions, they will link to yours as well. You can do this in Google by doing a "link: www.theirwebsite.com".

Although, this is only one piece of the puzzle, doing all of these things will dramatically help your link popularity which will in turn help your SEO.
