With cheap booze and thousands of beautiful girls in every bar, Latvia’s capital city Riga has become a party capital with thousands of Brits heading there every year. Even Tallinn, which was the place to be in 1990s, is now struggling to keep up Riga’s incredible nightlife. Riga’s old town is a major draw with outside seating in the summer and bars for every taste. In this posh part of town traditional British and Irish pubs rub shoulders with swanky bars and ultra funky cocktail lounges. You’re almost bound to find a comfortable place in which to get drunk. Some bars do stand out like PuPu where dancing is faster and drinking is a requirement. The Skyline Bar always has a million people in it, so that must be worth going to and the Orange Bar is a great modern place to meet ultra-attractive Latvian girls If Latvian bottoms wiggling seductively on the bar is more your cup of tea, head down to Kalku Iela where gogo dancers can do more than just wiggle if the right questions are posed in the right way! This place is aimed squarely at drunk stag lads from Britain, and there’s always something going on. The pubs and bars are great, but for a real ‘Gateshead Lad’ you have to try some of the clubs. As you would expect there are hundreds although if you want something remotely classy you will have to shop around for hours. If you are something of a club snob, try Nautilus. There are a rash of inevitable posers and hangers on in here, but you can usually find some genuinely cool people as well, and the music is quality endless disco cheese. Also try Club Essential where big name DJs such as Lee Coombs and Deep Dish have played in recent years. There is a nice layout and very efficient, usually good looking bar staff ready to assist you in your journey to the floor. La Rocca is similar in this respect and is a favorite with Riga’s sizable Russian community. If you have a brain and a night spent vomiting in someone’s hair to and Aqua B-side is not for you, there are some genuinely nice places to go on a Riga night out. the I love You cafe or the John Lemon bar are really cool, where you and fellow indy kids can wear whatever you like without being assaulted by some lads from Manchester. All these cheap drinks and beautiful women along with a small but growing alternative scene, would suggest that there are no downsides to a night out in Riga. However sadly there are, 80% of people on stag parties from Britain are complete idiots and will be there to fight and break things. The other 20% are the nicest people you could ever hope to meet, but the statistics don’t look good lets be honest. Another problem is the sheer volume of people visiting the area, the centre of Riga is not huge, and more and more European tourists are now flying in every week. Whether the increase in fuel prices will make any difference is yet to be seen, but if you’re on of these people who doesn’t like things to be too crowded, don’t visit Riga it really is packed most of the time.
