Registering a domain name the easy way

By: Dee Buteland

When the time comes to get a web domain name for a new business or a personal site, or for the sake of owning your name as a dot com, the steps are very straightforward.

To begin with, select the name you want. Most of the majority of the domain registration services, like Godaddy, have various tools which will help you. You enter any name, and they will reveal if the domain name is registered already or not. If it is not registered, you can buy it. If it is already registered by someone else, then the registration service will offer you different versions of the name to consider, or you could try other suffixes, like .biz or .org.

While .com domain names are still the most familiar and most common, the amount of traffic you will get to your new domain will depend on your web promotion work and will have not much to do with the domain suffix, so don't be to concerned if you cannot get the .com extension of the name you want.

Right, you have found the domain you want, and it is not already registered by someone else, how do you proceed?

Going to a domain site like Godaddy, and having done the search for your name and confirmed that it is unregistered, you will simply click on a 'Go to Checkout' button or similar.

You must choose the length of time you want to make the registration last – from one to ten years. If you have long term plans for the domain name, or want it as an possible investment, go for a longer registration. If the domain name is just for resale, choose a shorter period.

Now, you have to enter your name and email contact details. When you own a company, you will also insert the company name. These details is used for the internet domain registration – the name is recorded as legally belonging to you, for the period you have registered it for. Then, you become the 'registrant' of the name, and no-one else can use it.

Following on with the registration, you should select if your registration is to be public, or protected (or 'private'). A public registration means that any individual using a Whois lookup service will be able to check the domain name and see your contact details. When thinking about the website you are going to put online, you may think paying the small amount extra for a private registration which restricts viewing of your details will be worth it to avoid spam or prying eyes.

Having made your selection, you can give your credit card or Paypal details, pay the fee, and the domain becomes your own, for the period you have selected. A good registrar like Godaddy will remind you, using the contact details you registered with, when the time comes to update or renew registration of your domain.

Internet domain registration is really as easy as that!
