Orlando and Disney World

By: Mike Mulkern

A wonderful experience to be had by any child or children is when their parents tell them that the family holiday has been booked and they are all going to Disney World. Can you imagine all the excitement and joys of laughter, not to mention a sleepless night, looking forward to a truly amazing holiday.

Florida is the capital for all theme parks, it was 40 years ago that Walt Disney opened his first park, this being the first of many more to come. Universal studios, which is a working studio, also has another park called Islands of Adventure. This offers a number of big thrill rides.

Metro Orlando now is home to two million people. There are things to do for the whole family, not only the kids. Plan to spend a week or two in the central Florida area, if your budget allows.

Head first to the Magic Kingdom and visit Main street USA. There you will see some of your favorites like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy. Other destinations in the kingdom include Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland, Frontierland, and Liberty Square. Be sure also to go in Cinderella's castle and Mickey's Toontown Fair.

Epcot Center opened in 1982. Epcot comes from the acronym EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow). It's the center for innovation and international culture. It is the second most visited site at Disney World, after the Magic Kingdom. Go ther to see what the future looks like and try out cuisine from around the globe. Enjoy the whole day there, but don't leave before the fireworks spectacular.

Animal Kingdom brings an African experience to Florida and gives children the chance to see animals from other parts of the world. It is worth going to Animal Kingdom as early as possible so you can have a leisurely stroll around to stop and admire all the different species of animals.

Water Parks; how about trying Typhoon Lagoon themed around a tropical island with high speed water shoots and a huge lagoon with man-made waves - terrific fun. Those who want a relaxed time can enjoy a lazy river ride nice and gentle. How about Blizzard Beach for those who want to pretend they are near a snow capped mountain, with big slides just to make your heart beat that little bit faster. All the thrills and spills that children love.

Don't forget attractions outside of Disney. Sea World Orlando is great for the whole family. Watch Shamu, the killer whale, do his tricks. You can also see the dolphins, otters, seals, sea lions, sea turtles, manatees, sharks, stingrays, and penguins. You'll see sea birds also. Don't forget Sea World is is also about rides. They are building a new flying roller coaster, Manta, scheduled to open next year. For now you can enjoy Kraken, their "floorless" roller coaster.

Many choices await the traveler to Orlando and Disney. It mostly depends on convenience and money. You can stay at Disney World and take the monorail everywhere or stay in Orlando in any hotel chain you want. Be sure to look for your place early and if you can go when school is in session, crowds and prices will be a little less.
