Kitty Cats Our Valued Family Members

By: Paulina Jenkins

Cats have been our beloved pets for millenniums. Looking at ancient pictures, there is almost always a cat in the picture. Owning a cat is different from any other pet, cats almost instantaneously bond with the person or family they live with. That bond is so strong, that should something happen to someone in the family, the cat will show grief and mourn the loss.

Cats are pretty self reliant, and only need a few things to survive. These are food, food dish, water, toys, brushes and litter box. These are the essential items that you must have when you own a cat. Your cats diet is very important to keep him or her healthy. The diet should consist of protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins. It is very important that you give your cat a mixture of dry and wet cat food. This is because wet food contains many more vitamins then dry food, however dry food can help to reduce tartar and plaque build up on the teeth of your cats.

Modern toys for cats are more sophisticated. Kitty cats like any toys that move so that they can pounce on them. The more interactive the toys the cats seem to enjoy playing with. However, there are some toys that should be avoided such as the elastic toys for they could hurt the cats.

You must provide scratching posts because all cats love to scratch and sharpen their claws. Scratching is a natural cat function but they must not do that on your furniture or drapes. Direct them to the scratching surfaces you have provided to keep your furniture safe. Trim your cats' claws regularly with special trimmers that you can obtain at most pet supply store. Make sure you do not trim right down to the claw's pink part or you may hurt your kitty cats.

There are a great variety of cat brushes, combs and rakes that you can purchase from all pet supply stores. During a grooming session you can use a combination of different brushes, combs and rakes. Frequent brushing helps to maintain the coats healthy, reduces shedding and hairballs. Brushes also help to get rid of dead, dry skin, excess hair and spread even any natural oils over the coat of the kitty cats.

Longhaired cats need special care to keep their fur healthy. It is recommended that they be brushed on a daily basis, and if that is not possible, every other day, this not only keeps the cats fur healthy, it is also a way for you to show your kitty how much you love him or her. Cats love to be brushed and will look forward to it everyday as quality time between the two of you.

Hard brushes are perfect for the thick coats of shorthair cats. They can help to reduce knotting and tangle. For cats with short and sleek coats, soft brushes are the ones to use. You can use slicker brushes on shorthaired or on longhaired kitty cats. With cats that have long hairs, pin or wire brushes are great to keep the coats from knotting. For short haired kitty cats brushes with hard bristles are often used. There are also metal combs and that have bent bristles to trap all loose hair.

Today, kitty cats are still our loyal feline companions. They are so much a part of our lives. Statistic has shown that pets have a calming effect on our lives. For many people, especially elderly people, cats can be companions if they live alone. They offer unconditional love and loyalty. A cat can bring happiness and joy into a life that is sad and alone.
