Everywhere you go you are bound to run into a child wearing Kids Crocs. It only takes a few minutes sitting on a park bench before you see several of these hugely popular rubber clogs worn by kids strolling past. If you’re still not convinced, an afternoon at the mall–where Kids Crocs seem to be regulation footwear for kids and pre- teens–should be enough to convince you that they are the here and now, and by all indications, it appears that they are here to stay. In the wake of the widespread popularity of Kids Crocs however, a tide of concern has been rising as to their safety and appropriateness for use in the day-to-day activities of children. Reports have been coming from around the world of accidents involving children who were wearing these rubber clogs at the time. These incidents have taken place in a wide variety of locations, from malls to airports and subways and have caused parents all over the world some amount of concern. Are these accidents freak occurrences or are they a clear indication of Kids Crocs’ unsuitability for normal everyday use? Or worse: are they simply unsafe for ALL use and should therefore be banned totally? Crocs actually began life in 2002 as a boating shoe, an application for which it is ideally suited, owing to its non-slip tread and waterproof design. Many people subsequently noticed how useful they were for all types of weather and walking surfaces, and the trend took off from there, spreading rapidly all over the world. Comfort is of course one of the main reasons for the popularity of Kids Crocs owing to its loose fitting design and flexible material, that conforms to the wearer’s every movement. Kids Crocs also offer children adequate arch support and a certain degree of cushioning, given its spongy material. The holes that are part of the design of all Crocs models also allow air to flow freely inwards and keep the feet from sweating. The lack of laces is a huge plus for kids who either have not learned to tie their laces yet, or for older children who would rather not stop to tie and undo their laces. In fact, one advantage in Kids Crocs’ favor is that the lack of laces eliminates the risk of tripping over them or getting them caught in doorways or escalators, as has been known to happen with traditional sneakers. In any case, it is apparent that while Kids Crocs can and do present a degree of risk when used in critical areas such as escalators and other machinery, they are not necessarily more dangerous than wearing sneakers with the laces undone. Of course, some vigilance is definitely in order from the user or if they are not of sufficient age, from the parents, when Kids Crocs are used in these environments. For now it is best to limit the usage of Kids Crocs where they are most appropriate and use other types of footwear in more critical situations.
