Keeping a Network Secure

By: David T.

Introduction

When a network is built, there are many different issues that are taken into consideration before, during and after the actual construction is complete. One of those issues is the idea of investment protection. A network, once constructed, becomes an investment made by a company in order to help them further their growth. Networks do this by reducing costs through more efficient electronic processes; the money saved is then able to be put towards other pressing matters. Since it is an investment, the company naturally wants to protect that investment. One way to protect a network is to keep that network secure. Depending on the specifics of the network you are using, there are a number of ways to do this, but there are also some general points that you should be aware of.

Password Protection

This is perhaps the most important step towards keeping a network secure. This is not because it is the step that is able to do the most towards actually securing a network, but it is because this is the step that people most frequently forget to do. When people set up a network and especially when people set up a wireless network, the tendency is to keep the network unsecured unless specifically prompted to set passwords. This is a problem that is not very big in larger corporations, but in smaller businesses it is important for the person setting up the network to remember to use password protection. Password protection is the first line of defense against foreign intrusions, so make sure you use it.

Regular Maintenance

The electronic world is the fastest changing industry currently in existence and because of the technological advances that come fast and furious in the world today, turnover of hardware and software is very high. This means that people that are attempting to hack into servers and networks will, on average, have more sophisticated technology as time goes by. While it is not realistic for smaller corporations to replace their network every couple of years, it is important to realize that this is what many larger corporations do in fact do. Small businesses do not have the resources to do this and because of that prioritization is necessary. Make a list in decreasing importance of the components of your network (or what is housed in that network) that need to be protected and use your maintenance purchases to protect those things.

Conclusion

Understanding the full theory of keeping a network secure is no easy feat to accomplish and this is why there are professionals to take care of that kind of work. People that understand networks have at least a one year formal training degree in it and depending on their level of qualification may have trained for up to a decade to become as well versed and proficient as they are. Delegating or outsourcing the work to experts is a good way to ensure that your network is secure, but at the same time might cost a lot of money to do. The two tips mentioned above regarding password protection and regular maintenance allows you to get things started on the right foot.
