It’s Time For Some Great Australian Vintage In Hot Weather

By: Ian Love

It is a familiar sight during hot weather to see people outdoors enjoying the heat and guzzling cold bottles of beer, lemonade or just about anything to slake your thirst. Open grills and barbeques in backyards! The young and old, swimming and sunbathing and generally wallowing in the warmth of the summer sun! Nothing can replace the satisfaction better than a cold glass of water. Nevertheless one feels like having something more to round off that feeling of satisfaction and to accompany the juicy grills and barbecues. For something a bit more than the usual beer or lemonade let us see what type of wine suits this kind of weather.

There is a whole wide world of wines to be tasted, but let us check out some of the Australian wines available. So how do we select them? I would ask an expert. However, remember that it is your tongue and your palate. So you are free to choose according to your own taste and you have the right to disagree even with the experts. So here goes!

When you choose a wine to go with any food, you have to find the dominating flavor and ingredient involved. For example, lighter foods like chicken, vegetables, or any other white-fleshed foods would generally be accompanied by white or light wines. The rule of thumb says white with white, and red with red. However, you’re the boss, remember? Now, if you are marinating with heavily flavored and fiery sauces, your main ingredient may be white but your dominant flavor is the sauce so try it with the Shiraz from the Kangarilla Road Winery or the Merlot from Mildara-Blass.

For those of you who are interested in collecting wines one of the biggest purchasers of wines has these wines listed as Australia’s finest. Amongst the Red Wines are – Shiraz Banrock Station, Black Opal Cabernet/Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz from Mildara-Blass, Shiraz from Deakin Estate, Gamekeeper’s Reserve from St Hallett, Limestone Coast Shiraz from Lindemans, Shiraz/ Cabernet Sauvignon from Rosemount Estates, Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon from Seppelt, Long Flat Shiraz & Long Flat Red from Tyrell’s and Jamieson’s Run Coonawara Cabernet/Merlot/Shiraz from Penfold’s.

Amongst the White Wines are – Chardonnay from Banrock Station, Black Opal Chardonnay from Mildara-Blass, Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay, Limestone Coast Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc Bin 95 from Lindeman’s, Riesling Bin 7 from Leasingham, Barossa Semillon from Peter Lehmann, Poacher’s Blend from St Hallett and Diamond Sauvignon Blanc & Chardonnay/Semillon from Rosemount Estates.

If you have a deep pocket, you can go for the Grange Hermitage, which is a great wine capable of aging for 20 or more years. There is no rule that can apply to what you can eat or drink at any time of the day, month or year. You don’t require any particular stamp of approval from anyone. You have your own taste buds and individual pocket that influences your choice. So go ahead and find out for yourself, which of the vintages you think are the best to drink.
