Information you need to know before adopting a new dog to your house

By: jeffrey eugenio

There are many things you need to know before you adopt a new pet. The variations in temperament and traits among dog types can be compared to differences in people. Finding the perfect match between the dog type and the owner or family is the key to success in bringing a dog into your residence.

There are a lot of breeds that are naturally introduced to the dog world in addition to those produced explicitly by cross-breeding, like Labradoodle which is a cross breed between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle.

The obvious question to ask yourself is, what dog size your family can handle. Having a home with a big back yard is enough room for a big dog breed to run and also play.

Are you looking for a pet that is strong, yet cute and plays well with children? Are you considering of getting a guard dog for your home? Do you want to own a show dog to enter competitions?

Or do you just want to own a loyal companion, petite enough to have in an apartment and calm enough to sit with your family and accompanying you? These are practical considerations to think about as you hunt for the perfect type of pet.

How many people live in your home? Single person who works long hours then choose a dog breed that can cope with many time alone at home – maybe dog type that like dog toys and entertains himself.

If you live with little kids a medium to large-size dog is more appropriate since it is gentle by nature and tolerant with kids. Your children might think that their pet is like a toy – your children do not understand it's a living; breathing creatures that can get hurt and become aggressive by their actions.

There are breeds that are not patient with the aggressive behavior of small kids, but would be great with older children. A good dog for older people is a breed that doesn’t need that much maintenance.

Dogs can also be divided into 2 important categories - those that shed a lot and those that do not shed. Dog shedding is a huge trouble of dog owners. Dog fur clings to furniture, clothing as well as people who sit anywhere in the house. Short haired dogs may appear easier to groom but they too can shed. Shedding can be grouped or divided into barely sheds, seasonal only shedding or constant shedding.

Another important thing to consider is the size of the dog. Smaller dogs weigh less than 10 pounds, medium dogs weigh 11-25 pounds, large dogs weigh 26-50 pounds and extra large dogs weight 51-80 pounds. There are also extremely large breeds like Mastiffs and St. Bernard that can reach up to 100-180 pounds. Now you see why size is also a big factor in choosing a dog that is suited for you.

Do you think your furniture can take that much weight of dog? In choosing a dog always bear in mind to base your decision on the size the dog will grow to as an adult dog and not on the look of the puppy.

Big dogs are also big eaters. If you bring home a large dog like a Mastiff, you may need a second career just to pay for the food.

Care requirement is another important consideration. Some breeds require extra grooming and care than others. Dogs like poodles or show dogs may spend a little more time in grooming centers than you do. An ordinary dog breed may need weekly (or even daily) grooming to keep their furs from tangles and to maintain good physical health. Do not forget to research about the dog that you want. Check the dog breed’s temperament, size, and grooming requirements before you make any decision. Researching those important information will surely save you a lot of time and avoid any problem in taking care of the dog. Remember that it’s only fair to the dog you picked that you be ready for its basic needs, plus give the love and attention that only you and your family can give.
