Chennai is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Chennai has an estimated population of 7.5 million (2007), making it the fourth largest metropolitan city in India. The city was established in the 17th century by the British, who developed it into a major urban centre and naval base. By the 20th century, it had become an important administrative centre, as the capital of the Madras Presidency. Fort Saint George, is a must visit when touring Chennai. The National Shrine of Saint Thomas Basilica houses the tomb of Saint Thomas, who was believed to be a disciple of Jesus Christ who came to Chennai. Some of the most famous temples of Chennai are the ISKON Temple and the Ashtalakshmi Temple which is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Chennai has a number of places that have a lot to offer to shoppers including modern shopping malls and boutiques. George Town and Parry’s Corner are wholesale markets where you can pick up almost anything you plan to buy. Traditional items and handicrafts are available at Tanjore, Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram. Chennai has a large number of hotels and most of them offer a range of amenities and facilities.
