How To Be A Successful Camper This Summer

By: Larry Gilliam

I notice that more and more people are discovering the joys of outdoor living. All types of people: young and old, rich and poor, big families and singles. They have packed up their clothes and grabbed a sleeping bag - and off they go, seeking adventure in the peace and calm of the great outdoors. Perhaps you would like to be one of them - or perhaps you have had some bad times outdoors. We're here to tell you: you can be a better camper this summer!

Well, where should you start? Well, imagine that you have arrived at your campsite. What's the first thing that you will need? Right - it's a place to stay. Shelter is a basic necessity. When camping, there are basically two alternatives: trailers, and tents, which are the less expensive alternative. If you are cost-conscious, you might prefer to buy a tent. You will find them in all sizes and types, from single-unit tents (ideal for backpackers and wilderness camping) to family size camping tents. On the other hand, consider this: what if you have a spot of bad weather? Especially if you are planning on camping in the spring or fall, you might find that a trailer will be a better choice.

If you do decide on purchasing a trailer, again, you will find a great selection of different types and sizes. You can choose a huge park model, with all the modern conveniences, or a small, easy-to-tow pop-up or motorcycle trailer. All other things being equal, I think that a trailer is to be preferred if you will be camping in sour weather. Have you ever spent a week living out of a tent when it rained every day? I have, and I'm here to tell you - never again! And if you think that you don't have the cash to purchase a trailer, don't despair: many RV dealers also sell used camping trailers alongside of their brand-new models.

Once you have picked the form of shelter you prefer, your next priority is having a place to cook outdoors. Of course, if you have purchased a trailer with a kitchen, this issue has automatically been dealt with. But if you have purchased a tent instead, then you will also be wise to invest in a good outdoor camp stove.

Camp stoves come in various sizes and types: small, lightweight units for backpackers and mountaineers, large single burner units with a large capacity fuel tank, multi-burner units for feeding a hungry family - there are even some camp stoves that have built in ovens for baking! And when you buy your camp oven, don't forget to buy accessories, such as utensils, attachable griddles, lights for cooking at night and replacement hoses and burners.

What else might you find useful to take on your camping trip? Well, consider seating. What are you going to sit on? A broken-down tree log? The jagged top of a tree stump? The bare ground? You will soon find that those things don't make for a very comfortable sitting experience! Instead, why don't you look into purchasing one or more good-quality folding camping chairs. The newer models are very lightweight and yet sturdy. I have seen models advertised that can hold hundreds of pounds in weight - a great help for the overweight camper.

There is one more necessity that you just can't afford to be without: a good camping first aid kit. Again, I must share my experience with you: if you are out-of-doors, in a wilderness area, and a medical emergency arises, YOU are the doctor. A camping first aid kit will help you treat injuries like snake bites, or broken bones, as well as the simple stuff like sunburn and bee stings. People's lives have been saved because someone thought to bring a camping first aid kit along - don't forget yours!

So now you have selected the best type of outdoor shelter for you and your family. You have fitted out your outdoor kitchen and have arranged a couple of comfy outdoor camping chairs outside. You have your outdoor first aid kit handy if the need arises. Only one thing remains: get out there and enjoy the outdoors!
