How Does Your Restaurant Compare?

By: Patricia Farnham

I probably enjoy restaurants more than most other people do. I love to try different types of foods and I am not much of a cook myself. I find it too time consuming to shop for the ingredients, cook the food, and then have to clean up after I am done. I regularly meet with a couple of friends at a restaurant for lunch on a weekly basis. We have a great time hanging out together and enjoying the food.

There are some restaurants in the area that we go to on a regular basis and others that we skip altogether. There are many different reasons for this. Some of the best restaurants we go to have it all together - they offer outstanding food, an excellent atmosphere, quality service, and fair prices. These places are often full when we try to go out because everyone else has the same thought about them.

We also go to some restaurants where the food is good but many of the other elements are missing. For example we may sit for five minutes before anyone even notices. The places aren't kept up well but they do offer some really good food. Other places have just disappointed us so many times that we took them off our list of places to eat at.

Too many restaurant owners simply don't understand what it is that attracts me and others to their business. They seem to think if they are great cooks then people should be lined up to get inside. Well, I will tell you that good food is only part of the equation. If I am going to pay the money that I have worked so hard for, I want to have an experience that is wonderful.

I don't think I am alone when I say I want to leave a restaurant feeling like I have gotten my money's worth from the experience. I don't like to be disappointed or feel cheated. If a restaurant owner is lucky, customers will give it a second chance but this doesn't always happen. First impressions are very significant when it comes to choosing places to eat.

I enjoy traveling a great deal as well so I get to try out new restaurants. I will often base my decision on what I am in the mood for. Sometimes I am attracted to those that are a chain operation. I know exactly what I will be getting and I know I am going to enjoy it. However, I have had experiences at these types of chain restaurants that I wasn't happy with so there is no guarantee.

Millions of people use the internet every day to look for information. I use it to look for information about various restaurants. Some times I will eat at a particular one just because of the reviews I read online about it. It can be fun to travel and try out these places that others give such rave reviews. I too post my experiences with restaurants as I want to share that type of information with others as well.

Every successful restaurant has carefully implemented the practices that they use to entice customers to come in the door. Once they are there though, there are many other factors that have to be present in order to keep them satisfied. You want your customers to come back to eat there again. Having delicious food isn't going to be enough so make sure you focus your energy on covering the entire dining experience so you can be successful.
