You may think horse dentistry is a new fad, but there is nothing new under the sun. Free-roaming horses eat a lot of hard plants with a high woody content, as well as grasses with silicates. Even if your vet checks your horse’s teeth every half year, the chances are very high that there are points on the outside of the upper premolars and molars which are causing either constant discomfort or digging ulcerations in the cheeks. It may be simply a question of getting the bit to sit more comfortably to cause an immediate change in the behavior of the horse. Have you ever seen a horse smile? Friction can arise between dental practitioners and standard vets, who have very different approaches to dental problems. The equine dentists themselves are a rare breed. This may be because in dressage both the horse and its rider demonstrate the power, suppleness and joy related to ballet. At its best dressage is a sport of beauty and is only possible when there is a true partnership with the horse and rider. The great European riding masters of that period developed a sequential training system that has changed little since then and classical dressage is still considered the basis of trained modern dressage. A dressage saddle is used within dressage only; this is an English-style saddle. The standards of riding and training took and great leap forward with the introduction of dressage in the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games. Dressage is undertaken in a 60 meter long, with the width a third of the length arena with letters, A-K-V-E-S-H-C-M-R-B-P-F. The rider is required to design and set to music a performance of necessary movements and figures for the Musical Freestyle, for many the highlight of the dressage competition.
