Got some beautiful beads and don’t know what to do with them?

By: Terri Batsakis

Beads, beads and more beads. That’s what you see when you walk into a bead store. Log onto any bead website, more beads! Which ones do you buy? What are you going to make with them? How are you going to put them altogether? Where do you start? Your confidence starts to plummet as the overwhelming anxiety of where to start takes over.

If this scenario sounds like something you have experienced, understand this; you are not alone. Even the most experienced beaders felt exactly the same when they started out. Only the naturally gifted get it first pop; and let’s face it, how many of them are there around? So if you fall in the majority, do what I did when I first started; ask an expert! Ask someone that makes jewellery for sale.

Beading wire is one of the culprits where new beaders want to try it but have no clue where to start. Same advice for you guys; get your ideas and advice from the bead retailer.

A retailer who makes and sells their own jewellery, and sells all the beads, chain and findings that they use, are the best people to buy from. That way at least you know where to find all the supplies to make that particular jewellery piece.

A customer friendly bead retailer will gladly offer their free advice on how to make their jewellery and what items to use. Apart from being flattered that you love their unique pieces of jewellery, it means that they increase their bead sales as well. They’d be crazy not to help you out!

If you are a beginner you should be able to select the jewellery piece you would like to make, then contact the bead retailer asking what beads, head pins, eye pins, chain and other findings you will need to make that item. Better yet, they should be able to send you instructions, on how to make that item.

If you are a little more advanced, then you select the components you need yourself, simply by studying the piece of jewellery you would like to make.

Seeing ideas on what to make, makes it easier to choose what beads to purchase. You can see what size beads are more suitable and puts the size of the beads into perspective.

Don’t spend a fortune on beads you are not going to use. Buy in smaller quantities to ensure you use the lot. You might save by buying in bulk but think of the money you lose when you have left over beads sitting around idle. Small quantities of different beads mean you end up with lots of unique jewellery pieces and no wastage.

What you should buy in bulk are the findings. Findings like head pins, eye pins, jump rings and crimps are things you will use over and over again. No matter how unique your jewellery pieces are, chances are you have used the same findings to put them together. So save money by buying these items in larger quantities. Then you have more money available for beads.

Beading can become a very expensive hobby. An honest bead retailer will show you how to cut your costs without cutting your quality. They will share with you their experience and ideas on how to save time and money. They will guide you along with what tools of the trade are necessary and which ones are just gimmicks. The less you spend on tools the more you can spend on, you guessed it, beads!

Knowing where to start can be daunting. Let a passionate expert enhance your beading creativity. Ignite your passion now.
