There are no strict rules guiding the exact value of gift and specific type or nature of gifts that a person selects for the games. These conditions are generally different due to different quantity of people involved and other factors affecting the office and its staffs. It requires each participant to buy a present of certain predetermined value indicted by the responsible personnel of the office and the game, for instance five dollars to twenty dollars. The recommended gift theme should focus on the fun element of the gift which contributes to a merrier and exciting game that entertains all the participants in all ways. The best object would be one that is non practical but captures attention and something which everyone would want. Originally the "white elephant" gift exchange was a way for people to "regift" or give someone a gift they themselves received and don't want. For a fun twist, you could ask people to bring something from their home like that, or you can require they purchase something (with the aforementioned limit on spending).
