That old saying �If it looks too good to be true, it probably is� hits the mark when it comes to downloading free movies. Yes, you can download some movies; but if you find a site advertising the latest Indiana Jones or Sex in the City Movie for free downloads, it is a scam. More than a scam, actually; these first-run movies have been pirated (stolen) and placed on the internet for others to download. Because they are stolen, they are illegal and if you download illegal movies you may be subject to criminal prosecution. If you want to view first-run (playing at theatres now) movies, you are going to have to bite the bullet and buy a ticket like everyone else. Your other options include waiting for them to come to cable pay-per-view or released on DVD for purchase. Do be warned, however, smart film executives usually feature only the �highlights� in their trailers. So, a three-minute trailer may contain the best parts of the movie. Still, trailers, clips and extra footage are great fun to watch. Apple Movie Trailers is a really good site if this is what you are looking for. Documentaries and independent films (also called �Indies�) can be found in abundance � at no charge � on various internet sites. Simply search �free movie downloads� and you will be directed to sites that offer documentaries, independent films and films which belong in the public domain. Moviesfoundonline.com is a great site for documentaries. Two documentaries which have received rave reviews and can be downloaded for free are �The U.S. vs. John Lennon� and �Battle for Baghdad � 2007�. Both of these are great documentaries � informative and entertaining. Not all documentaries on the site are of a serious nature. You can find documentaries in comedic and musical categories as well. You have absolutely nothing to lose, and potentially a good deal to gain by paying a visit to the site. If you are a classic film buff, Turner Classic Movies will definitely appeal to you. Turner offers hundreds of clips, trailers and footage of some of the best movies ever made. Additionally, once films are no longer under copyright restriction, Turner offers you the ability to download them at no charge. Currently, you can download �McClintock�, starring John Wayne. This is only one of many good movies available for no charge and at your convenience. A site called CinemaNow.com offers movies for sale, download (at a fee) and for rent. At CinemaNow.com you can rent a full-length movie for $3.99. Currently available for rent on their site: Sweeney Todd, Juno and the Oscar-Winner, No Country for Old Men Rental films are actually made available to the consumer via download to your computer. It is not possible to burn downloaded rental films to a DVD � they have a program which prohibits this.
