After graduates leave their university apartments and residence, they need to consider not only where they will work for their first professional job but where they will live during their employment. While graduates don’t immediately know what job they will have after school is over, they can certainly choose to live in accommodations in a certain city or country where they want to find work. Graduate professionals may think that all apartments and accommodations are roughly the same. However, there are many options available for graduates who are looking for a place to rest their head after a long day of work. The most obvious accommodation option for graduates is renting an apartment. From a single person studio apartment to a multi-person loft, there is a wide range of apartment sizes for graduates to choose from. However, there is more than apartment size to consider when renting an apartment near a potential job. Graduates need to consider the public transportation options in a particular city, as utilizing buses and trains has become more popular as a means to reach the office. As well, the length of the lease, the included amenities of the apartment, and the cost of rent per month are important considerations. Graduates who work for larger national and international companies can also provide housing for their employees. For graduates who know where they are working or are living in temporary housing until they are employed, corporate housing is a great option. Often, corporate apartments and lofts come complete with new appliances, hotel-like amenities, and a location near the graduate’s office. However, this option is only for graduates who can afford to spend a little more on rent per month. While corporate housing is less expensive than comparable luxury apartments, it is more expensive than the average apartment in the United Kingdom. There are plenty of other accommodation options for graduates looking for work. Renting a room or attic in a local home can often be inexpensive and flexible enough if new housing is needed. Moving in with friends or colleagues who live in a particular city of interest is also a great way to save money and it helps maintain that connection to the university atmosphere. Finding a short term lease on an apartment is perhaps the best idea for graduates who are on the move because a longer lease extension is available for graduates who find a job in their city of residence.
