EDB Corruption after Mounting the Database

By: Andrew Watson

In Microsoft Exchange Server, when you try to restore a database from backup to the production location subsequent to mounting a blank database, the resulting database contains data or information since you have mounted the new blank database.

The remaining information still exists but it is unusable. The remaining mailboxes can’t be opened. It might possible that when you open these files, you fail to do it and it shows some sort of error messages.

Cause

In Exchange Server, this problem occurs due to the deletion or corruption in transaction log file. When you mount any blank store, it stores the createDB transaction in the transaction log and can possibly overwrite or delete the existing log files.

In this situations, the restore does bring all of the old data back, but as you play through the logs in the production transition log directory, you finally hit the createDB transaction. It causes you to unknowingly mount the blank databases again. The createDB transaction is then finished with the rest of the log files. So, you only have the uncorrupted mails from the time period after you have mounted the database.

Resolution

In order to work around this problem, you need to mount the database again in production and do not restore the backup at production location. Instead, continue running the database in same state and restore the data to the recovery storage group.

This method will possibly solve out your problem and after this solution, you will be able to access your mailboxes as before. But this is not an ideal and safe method. The data stored after the last earlier mounting of the database is neither in database nor in backup because it has deleted from the database due to mounting it and it has not been backed up.

In such situations, you need for something that can repair the corrupted EDB file without requiring the mounting of the database. The same task can be done with the help of Exchange Server Recovery software.

Exchange server recovery or Exchange recovery software are the applications that are specially designed to repair and restore the corrupted EDB file or Exchange server mailboxes. These software do the complete scanning of the corrupted EDB file and restore it to the same database that can be further used in normal way.
