Dental Implants are a Permanent Solution to Lost Teeth

By: Jayden Adams

Offering a more natural look, feel and function, the use of dental implants instead of bridges and dentures has exploded in popularity in the past several decades because they are permanently fixed in the mouth. They don’t look fake – like dentures often do, and they are not likely to loosen, like dentures which eventually have to be replaced. And flossing is easy to do with dental implants.

“Osseointegration”, this very strong bond to surrounding bone, is a term coming from the Latin word “osseus” meaning "bony”. The scientific research that allowed these to come into being began in the 1950’s with the discovery that metal titanium had an ability to bond with bone.

There’s no more the need for dentures and bridges. Everyone finds it easier to eat, they look better and no more troublesome denture cleansing. After years of careful research and study, dental implants (titanium cylinders placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth) have been refined with high success rates. There are now patients who have had implant supported teeth for more than twenty-five years.

“If you, like millions of Americans, have lost one or more teeth,” explains Dr. Maddahi, “you may be all too familiar with the unpleasant consequences. I tell my patients with missing teeth that they should consider dental implants. For many, missing teeth lead to an unattractive smile, embarrassment from loose dentures, and pain or difficulty with eating. Traditional dentistry can provide replacements for missing teeth using bridges, removable partials and dentures; however, each of these has its problems.”

Partials and dentures can, at times, be very unstable leading to denture sores or speech difficulties. Another little known problem associated with tooth loss is a process known as ‘atrophy’, a shrinking of the jawbone that can progress over the years. Bone atrophy not only affects jaw function, but can cause adverse facial cosmetic changes, making the need to replace dentures.

Dental implants are an effective, safe and predictable solution to the problems resulting from missing teeth. Many patients report they like the look more, and state that the implants feel and function like natural teeth.

Dr. Maddahi likes to inform his patients of the basis of his choices. “Dental implants are substitutes for the roots of missing teeth. They act as an anchor for a replacement tooth or crown or a set of replacement teeth. Replacing missing teeth is important to an individual’s general health and to the health of remaining teeth. Chewing ability is lost when a tooth is lost. Unreplaced teeth can cause other teeth to be lost, tipped or crowded and create subsequent problems. There are also the obvious problems of poor appearance and loss of confidence caused by one or more missing teeth.”

A recent patient of Dr. Maddahi, E.Y., has this to share, “I enjoyed beautiful teeth - a lovely smile for most of my life. When I approached senior age I noticed it mostly in my teeth, not to mention the usual minor physical changes. What was startling to me was my smile became "tighter". Photos reflect this and instead of my happy look there was barely a noticeable smile. I had been going to the same dentist for over thirty years and never was there a mention to me about smile improvement. Fortunately, I had need to see another dentist. My sister often told me about this wonderful, super, artistic doctor that had given her a new total dental beautification. That's when I first met Dr. Maddahi.”

“He immediately appealed to my inner feelings and my "fears" about undertaking what I thought would be a major (pain) project. My fears were quickly put to rest. Dr. Maddahi, and his staff were so loving and tender (which I absolutely needed) and reassured me that all would be fine and that my beautiful smile would return looking better than ever before. All true. All true. I now smile fully and people warmly respond whether at the mall on a walk, etc. Thank you – thank you, Dr. Maddahi.”
