Designer perfumes are generally those unique types of perfumes which are custom-made according to the specifications of a certain person or company so that they are special and are not easily copied by any other individual. Unfortunately, designer perfumes may be so well-made that they are no longer affordable to the mass market – so that designer perfumes also count as luxury perfumes. And being luxury items, designer perfumes will count as status symbols based on cost and desirability. With all these going for it, one wonders, how many designer perfumes last on the retail market for long? Designer perfumes may still fall under the traditional categories of women’s perfumes and men’s perfumes. But nowadays, we also have the category of unisex perfumes (which these same women’s and men’s perfumes may also fall under.) It all depends who the manufacturer intended to use the products and who actually ends up using the products. Designer perfumes can be available in the big volume bottles (sometimes literally a whole pint or a gallon maybe) for those who can afford big one-type volume purchases; or in the smaller containers which are more affordable even for frequent users. One very high-end product is the White Diamonds designer perfume from veteran actress and beauty icon Elizabeth Taylor. This is available as perfume, a body spray, a body lotion, and Eau de toilette spray. This brand has been around for quite some time, so maybe Ms. Taylor has quite a captive audience with her products. Among the men’s designer perfumes would be the all-time favorite of yuppies and socialites alike – Obsession from Calvin Klein. Being so popular, you will also find many rip-offs of this brand in the blackmarket. The difference between the actual Obsession designer perfumes though and the counterfeit ones is that the fakes tend to evaporate more quickly than the real designer perfumes. You literally get more value for your money with an original, but the fakes could be more affordable if you are hard up and just want someone to get a whiff of you for an hour or so. Someone said though that the best compliment is to be copied, so you know Obsession may be worth obsessing over as your favorite among designer perfumes. There is not much talk about the Versace line of designer perfumes even though with the sudden death of Gianni much publicity was given to this already popular designer and his products. Still, if you want to switch designer perfumes and feel like taking a walk on the wild side, the Versace designer perfumes may bear scrutiny quite well. Designer perfumes that have had the input of a famous person in the development of the perfume brand are called signature perfumes. The manufacturer has the advantage of a famous endorser on his side then who will be able to bring in publicity for the product. However, if the endorser asks for high fees to endorse the product, the manufacturer has to gauge whether the potential benefits are bigger than the risks that might come from people finding the end price per container to be too prohibitive for them. Even the best-smelling scent may have to be set on the back-burner if it is impractical to mass produce. So we can see that designer perfumes are a product like any other out there – maybe a bit better smelling and more attractive to use than others, but one that has to bring in profits for its maker just like any business product. If designer perfumes fail to sell, even the most excellent of them will be retired by the company making them.
