Common sense dog training advice to discover the correct program to train your dog

By: Clive Hornsby

If you stumble upon your dog gnawing away at the velvet cushion you love so much, don’t start yelling at it or you may scare it away from you. Your puppy will definitely not understand if you hit it when you find it chewing a household item, instead, pick up what it is tearing to shreds and yell at that to communicate your displeasure to it.

Even if you send your dog away to training school, you will eventually have to be present at a point during the training to learn all about the commands your dog is responding to. Contrary to what some people think, a dog cannot be trained in your absence because you need to be the one to issue out the commands. Your dog needs to get used to your tone of voice before it responds to any command that you issue.

Dog training is the process of influencing a dog to act or not to act in a particular way. The way you react to your dog’s actions will determine its tendency to either re-do or desist from a particular line of action. You need to be clear about your words and actions if you want your dog to respond appropriately.

You need to understand that the mind of a dog is linear if you want to train it successfully. A dog can understand a string of commands in one setting but may have to be reeducated with the same string of commands in another setting. A dog that obeys a sit command at home may be confused when you order it to sit in a park because of the change of location.

Any slight change in the tone of your voice when you issue commands can throw a dog into confusion. Dogs that have grown so used to a particular tone of voice may be unsure about what to do if a different tone is used. Be consistent in both the tone and the speed of what you are saying so that your dog will understand it.

Some electronic collars are designed to make a dog stop barking. If your dog has the habit of barking incessantly, an electronic collar that squirts citronella into its nose when it barks needlessly is advised. Dogs are particularly allergic to citronella squirted from a collar because it irritates them.

Your dog needs to be taught how to obey you. A dog that does not know how to respond to any of your commands can produce a well of frustration in you. Dog care includes teaching it to know what you expect of it and how to respond to your needs.

Ensure that your dog gets an opportunity to mingle with other dogs so that it does not become overly aggressive. In dogs, aggression is usually a sign of frustration or pent up fury. If your dog expresses aggression too much, take it to see a vet doctor.
