Why is cheap web hosting so cheap? What do you sacrifice to have this lower price? Nearly all cheap web hosting packages are shared webhosting options. This unavoidably means that you are sacrificing specific options when it comes to speed, reliability and security. Cheap, shared web hosting is generally placed on a server with many other users who have purchased the same package. This means that if one of the other users does something with their hosting that lags the operation of your server like running an incorrectly programmed CRON job that continues to pull resources away from the server, your site(s) will be affected by it. This could mean that your websites could be down for an unknown amount of time because of the negligence of just one user. Since there could be dozens of users sharing hosting on one server the odds are against you when it comes to possible crashes. Shared web hosting also means shared bandwidth to the server. If one of the other users hosts a high traffic site, or a website that contains lots of video or flash that takes a lot of bandwidth to load, your website will suffer as a result. If you had the intention of hosting a site like that yourself, you may not want to do it on shared web hosting. If one of the users that shares your server has security flaws within their site there is a good chance that any potential damage that may be done will be done to the entire server, not any of that user's individual sites. This will cause your websites to suffer any limited bandwidth or crashes that may result. Cheap web hosting is an alright option if your intention is to host several small, text based content sites and slow loading or downtimes will not affect your plans. Just remember that cheap web hosting is not always comparable to affordable web hosting.
