Bodybuilder Photos: Easy!

By: Colette Thyman

Bodybuilders get lots of benefits out of a photo shoot. Hard work can be seen to pay off in the glossy images, but more importantly, training progress and results can be observed in the photos.

Many trainers take bodybuilder photos to see if a diet or weight-training program is really working. By comparing photos, the trainer and athlete are able to see if there has been any progression, or where problem areas may lie.

It's not hard to take professional quality bodybuilder photos; just follow these tips from the pros:

Prepare

The goal is to photograph muscle and little else.

* Remove all body hair by shaving, waxing or trimming. A smooth, sleek effect is essential, so any body hair has to go.

* Avoid food intake prior to the photo shoot, as a full belly tends to distend and protrude.

* A quick but intense workout right before picture time will get the blood circulating and increase muscle volume.

* Apply a thin coat of baby or cooking oil to the legs, arms, and torso to give a polished look to the body, and to highlight sinew and muscle curves.

Be a Poser

A good pose or series of poses will be the key element of a portfolio. The right pose will display the results of many hours of hard work by the athlete.

* Suck in the stomach by deeply inhaling.

* Standing with the spine straight, or curved slightly backward, will create a trimmer look.

* Tense up the chest, legs, arms, and stomach.

* Smiling during all of this tensing will result in a more natural look to the final photos, even if they are entirely staged.

Digital Camera

Digital cameras are wonderful choices for those who like to do a lot of editing.

* Digital photography allows the photos to be uploaded directly to the computer, where they can be carefully edited with software like Adobe Photoshop.

* Slight imperfections like red-eye can be removed, and lighting errors can easily be corrected.

* Using a tripod to steady the camera will reduce the chances of having blurry images.

Lighting

* Proper contrast and shadowing are essential for a great picture.

* Top lights shining down will display shadows on the bottom of muscles.

* Lighting from below will highlight the lower abdomen, and reduce the size of chest muscles.

* Avoid using a flash for bodybuilding photos, as this can ruin the natural lighting contrasts.

Before a competition, or for tracking progress over the months, good bodybuilding photos can be a great aid to success in this sport. Keep the above simple rules in mind and you will get noteworthy results.
