All Types of Anxiety Aren't the Same

It should be reasonable to assume that finding a anxiety disorder treatments would take some research and careful consideration. While many have chosen to treat symptoms with medication, there are other alternative treatment options available. The key is to try and understand what caused the problem and brought you to this difficult mental state. What we know is that there are many things that can cause anxiety and there is no one size fits all treatment plan.

One of the most popular ways many attempt to treat anxiety is with drugs. 3 of the most popular prescription drugs sold in the U.S. today are anti-anxiety or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI type meds. The fact that they remain popular may suggest that while symptoms are controlled, these drugs are not really a long term cure or solution.

They are very good at relieving symptoms associated with anxiety however. The side effects are cause for concern and care must be taken when these drugs are used. While there is evidence to suggest that "SOME" teenagers with varying degrees of anxiety and depression may be more likely to commit suicide, that fact alone shouldn't be enough to completely ignore all the benefits this class of medications have done for patients.

The point is that all drugs come with risk and the potential side effects. Depression and anxiety medications are no exception. An increased risk of suicide has been suggested when these drugs have been used by some sub-groups. Bottom line is that only you and your doctor can determine what's right for you. For many however, this class of medications is considered more a shorter term relief while the causes of the problem are more fully considered, reviewed and corrected.

The other popular methods of treatment use either group or private counseling focusing on behavior or cognitive therapy.

Lastly, natural supplements, relaxation, breathing etc. can also be used. These are much more subtle in their effects but with fewer side effects make them a viable option for many with mild to moderate anxiety.

So if you consider all the mental conditions that have anxiety as a symptom and add up all the different treatment options, you can recognize how difficult it can be to get an accurate diagnosis. This doesn't mean that you can't get be helped. It only means that you may need to try several things before finding the treatment that will work best for you.

If you've only now discovered that something isn't right and you suspect anxiety, checking out anxiety disorder treatments choices may be the thing to do. Why commit to expensive prescription medications or long term counseling before learning about safer options.
