A Number Of Things To Bear In Mind When Purchasing Good Health Insurance

By: Donald Saunders

With such a large number of options available in the field of health insurance plans it's hard to know just what to look for when you are trying to select a good health insurance plan which will meet your needs.

The first step must be to define precisely what your specific needs are. For example, do you need insurance coverage for just yourself or are you looking for a plan to cover yourself and your spouse or your entire family? Not surprisingly this is a fairly easy question but the next one is a little more difficult. What precisely are your health needs? Are you and/or the other people who have to be included in any plan fit and healthy or are there any pre-existing medical conditions which will need to be taken into consideration? Is there anybody with special medical needs or will they need to be treated by specific medical practitioners or in particular medical institutions?

Then, you must understand the options that are open to you if you are organizing coverage through a group insurance scheme set up by your employer. Here your options will be restricted to those which are provided under the plan that the company is offering and this might or might not make your decision simpler. If you are not looking at coverage under a company's group plan then you will need to have a basic knowledge of the difference between managed care plans and indemnity plans.

An indemnity plan provides you with the freedom to choose when and where you go for medical treatment. This freedom of choice will generally be at the price of high out-of-pocket costs though in almost all cases this can be a reasonable trade-off. Managed care plans, on the other hand, are much more restrictive and you will have to seek treatment from practitioners and in medical facilities within the managed care plan's network. For any treatment which is over and above what could reasonably be classified as basic care you will also normally be required to seek pre-approval. Costs under managed care plans are lower than those seen under indemnity plans and if you are not particularly concerned about where and by whom you are treated, or have to keep a close eye on medical costs, then a managed care plan may well be a good choice for you. Of course this is a very basic comparison and you will need to investigate this further depending upon your own personal circumstances.

Having decided upon the sort of plan you require, the next question is how to set about picking the best insurance provider. There are many companies selling health insurance plans nowadays ranging from fairly small independent firms to the well-known corporate giants. As is the case with any significant purchase, and health insurance nowadays certainly comes into this bracket, you have got to do your homework before making any decision.

An excellent starting point could be to ask colleagues and friends or indeed your own practitioner. The Internet will also give you a great deal of information on the vast range of health insurance providers.
