A Beginner's Guide to Spyware

Do you know what spyware is all about? Well, I can assure you if you enjoy downloading anything for free off the internetbrace yourself, because you probably have a few these malicious programs crawling through your PC this very moment.

Spyware is a type of software that installs on your computer without asking you. Small computer programs can be downloaded onto your computer from the Internet and install themselves without your knowledge.

Their most popular maneuver is to pin the coat tail of another seemingly innocent program. These carriers, freeware or shareware, are usually free programs off the internet. The biggest of the freeware used would be free porn, games & file sharing applications. Believe it or not, it is a legal way of advertising is most scenarios.

After you download your much anticipated free program, you click the installation icon. Then there is a license agreement that stands in the way of your enjoyment. So of course, just like me, you quickly select the I Agree button. And this is what makes these spyware programs legal.

Normally spyware main agenda is to report your PC activity to a third party and/or pop up advertisements on your PC. I am certain you have had the experience of random bombardment of annoying pop ups! This is how the creators of spyware software make their money. Then there are a lot of spyware applications that simply collect useful data for advertising companies to learn more about your Internet behavior.

Then there are the true spyware villains that gather email addresses and passwords off your PC and either use them or sell your personal information to the highest bidder of the underground Internet world.

Do I Have Spyware?

Here are some signs of spyware:

1) Pop ups even when you are not browsing the Internet

2) New toolbars or icons appear on your browser and desktop

3) Web browsing seems slower and your PC appears to have inherited a turtle gene

4) Your browser constantly goes aloft with advertising with sites.

5) The settings on your browser change unexpectedly

6) Advertisement windows are everywhere

If any of these symptoms are visible, do something!

I dont want to seek any help, what can I do?

1) Get a reputable firewall program for your PC. If you have a Windows computer that was built within the last five years, then there is already a firewall built-in. Just make sure it is not disabled. Also virus protection software have firewalls integrated into the application.

2) Stop clicking on the pop up advertisements. This decreases the amount of advertisements you may receive.

3) Be careful what you install. Dont install software unless you know exactly what it is, and where it came from. If the company that makes it isnt a reputable one, dont install it or get expert advice.

4) Keep your PC up-to-date. It is wise to keep your automatic update feature turned on.

5) Use reputable antispyware software.

Watch out for antispyware scams. These programs perpetrate themselves as legitimate software, but they are simply spyware programs. Needless to say, research to proactively guard yourself from scams such as this.

Once you have spyware cleaning software installed, run it often and regularly and delete any programs the software finds.
