Guanaja Honduras, where in the world is that, you ask? Guanaja is a small island in the Caribbean located about forty miles off the northern coast of Honduras and is in the Bay Island chain. It neighbors El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua in Central America. Less than two hours from Miami, there are several airlines that service Honduras making travel there simple and easy! The Bay Islands are made up of three large islands, Utila, Roatan and Guanaja. Utila is famous for the number of whale sharks that reside there. You can even dive with them! Roatan has several cruise ship docks and is strongly tourist oriented, while Guanaja has not enjoyed the same popularity, probably due to the fact there are no roads on the island and all travel must be done by boat or foot. Guanaja has the tallest peak, at fourteen hundred feet, several waterfalls and freshwater streams. How the heck do you pronounce Guanaja, does it really matter? I began researching the possibilities of affordable retirement there about five years ago. Face it, the worst case scenario, is to not have enough money to live in the way you have become accustomed to, while working the old nine to five! Adventure seekers, young for their age and possibly facing a retirement with less money than they had planned on, this describes the Baby Boom generation that is getting ready to retire now. Born after WWII and before Vietnam really got going, they are willing to consider going south of the border for affordable retirement. The Bay Islands of Honduras are surrounded by the worlds second largest barrier reef and this makes Guanaja a mecca for the retiree who wants to spend his day with his head underwater! Bright, colorful corals and fish, what more could a diver want? Maybe you just want to hike up to the waterfalls and take a dip in the clear fresh water. Guanaja caters to every lifestyle whether zip lining from tree to tree or wading into the clear waters of the Caribbean stalking a bonefish on the fly! The land barons have not yet discovered Guanaja and because of this, the property is still quite affordable. Ocean front can still be had from $20,000. A two hundred thousand dollar home will run you less than two hundred dollars in property taxes. I like that! An average pension of $1,000 to 1,500 a month can allow a retiree to live in comfort in Guanaja. How would you like a cook or someone to help with chores? You can hire this type of help for about $150 a month. Would that make your retired life easier? Medical care is located in Savannah Bight located on the island or a clinic is a five minute boat ride to Bonacca Town. For Emergencies, you have a state of the art hospital in La Ceiba on the mainland, forty miles away; most of the doctors there have been trained in the United States or Cuba. The Baby Boomers are educated enough to know that our fixed income in retirement might not allow us to live the way we have become accustomed to in the United States. Social Security, who knows! This Bay Island Paradise, named Guanaja might be an affordable solution to our problem.
