4 Simple Steps Which You Absolutely Must Take To Get Affordable Health Insurance

By: Donald Saunders

As with so many things today purchasing health insurance can be difficult with a huge number of insurers selling a wide range of policies and all competing against each other for your business. The secret of course is to find the best policy to meet your personal needs together with the needs of your family and to do so at the right price.

If you are purchasing health insurance for the first time, perhaps having to arrange your own cover after many years of enjoying coverage under an employer's scheme, then there are 4 straightforward steps that you must take to ensure that you buy the right affordable health insurance plan.

1. Start by deciding just how much you are prepared to pay for health insurance and base your search for a plan around this sum of money.

If you and your family are all relatively young and in good health then you could find that it is not too difficult to locate good comprehensive coverage within your budget. But, if you are not able to locate a policy at the price you are willing to pay, do not be enticed to pay any more than you can afford!

Locate a policy that is within your budget!

There are a large number of different policies on offer today with various different payment structures. For example, it could suit your needs to find a policy which has a high deductible and low monthly premiums that also qualifies for use under a health savings plan. This would have the benefit of allowing you to build up a cash value in your policy to meet future claims and at the same time qualify for tax relief.

2. Look around and consider policies being offered by several companies. Make sure that any insurer being considered provides coverage within your area and will also cover you should you be traveling out of state either on business or for fun.

3. As soon as you have pared your search down to perhaps 2 or 3 possible health insurers, research each company carefully to ensure that they are both reputable and financially sound. More often than not you will be dealing with major providers who have been in business for many years and are well-known 'household' names. But, if the insurer you are considering is not so well known then you should check them out using an online service such as that provided by A. M. Best. If you are in any doubt at all about a company then you would probably be best advised to drop it from your list of possible insurers.

4. An excellent indication of just how good an insurer is the number of complaints which it receives from unhappy policy holders. Clearly any insurer with a high number of complaints and a lot of unhappy customers should be avoided and, happily, you can get this information online at the National Association of Insurance Commissioner's website.

Health insurance is very much a consumer product these days and policies come in every shape and size to suit a host of needs. Take the time needed therefore to acquaint yourself with exactly what is available to you within your state and discover the policy which best meets your individual needs. With a bit of time and some careful investigation you will invariably find the right affordable health insurance plan.
