For most people travel insurance is simply one of the many extras that the travel agent tries to get us to add to our holiday package to help boost his profits and make our holiday even more expensive than it has to be. But, there are at least 3 very important reasons for ensuring that you do not leave home without your international travel medical insurance plan in your pocket. First, a travel insurance plan can protect you from losing your financial investment in your holiday should an emergency crop up which forces you to cancel your vacation. This is particularly true when you are booking your holiday well in advance as you cannot know what might happen in the weeks or months leading up to your departure. This said, emergencies have a habit of appearing at any time and without notice which makes this one form of protection that should not be considered in terms of time. It is human nature to feel that nothing is ever going to happen to us but a vacation can often involve a considerable up-front payment and the loss of these funds may mean that you are unable to re-book your vacation later on. Second, a travel insurance plan permits you to pay for medical treatment both while you are in transit and in your destination country and, in the event of a significant illness or accident, will also meet the cost of bringing you back home if necessary. Medical care may be very good abroad and it may even be a lot less expensive than it is back at home. However, a day or two in hospital might still leave you with a substantial bill that will eat deeply into your vacations spending money. You could also discover that medical treatment abroad leaves a lot to be desired and you could well have to curtail your vacation and return home to get the treatment you need. Third, a travel insurance plan can provide protection for your possessions both while you are traveling and abroad so that you will receive compensation in the event of loss or damage. If you are a regular traveler then you will probably have experienced the loss of your luggage at some stage and will know only too well just how inconvenient and expensive it can be. I shall never forget stopping off for a bite to eat on my way to the airport on one holiday and carefully securing my suitcase in the trunk of my hire car. When I got back to the car roughly thirty minutes later I found that someone had picked the lock on the passenger door and folded the back seat down to gain acces to the boot and make off with my case. I will also not soon forget sitting at a traffic light one hot and sunny day when a motorbike drew up alongside the car and a man reached through the open passenger side window to snatch my mother's purse which was lying by her feet on the floor. Traveling abroad can be expensive enough but traveling without adequate insurance cover can lead to bills which you simply cannot afford to pay. Accordingly, whenever you are making plans for a trip do not forget to add travel insurance to your vacation list.
